Jalen Rose Leadership Academy

In 2011, JRLA held their first day of classes. After the school year though, they were ready to expand to meet the needs of their growing student population. In 2012, JRLA purchased an existing school building in Detroit. Their goal was to grow this school by six classrooms and provide the teachers with a break room. They first renovated the existing building to ensure it would blend with the new space with a uniform and current learning environment, and then were ready for the classroom additions.

The VESTA team built a single story modular addition that consists of a brick exterior and steel siding along with oak trim detailing on the interior to allow the space to blend seamlessly. The building addition is separated by a firewall and consists of five standard classrooms, one teacher break room, and one plumbing module.

The building was installed and secured in seven days, and the onsite work was completed in 84 days. The restrooms, with 8’ ceramic tile walls and solid surface counters with under mount sinks, were fully finished in the factory. The building is outfitted with classroom security lock-sets to ensure the safety of the occupants. The HVAC systems were installed and completed onsite and consist of a 95% high efficiency gas furnaces with energy recovery ventilator and a rooftop mounted condenser for each classroom. The modules were also built to accommodate AV equipment in every classroom.

Ventilation is monitored by a CO2 sensor in every occupied space. The building also features windows with vandal resistant glass, recessed lockers in the corridor, recyclable carpet tile, low maintenance ceramic tile walls, and low energy lighting controlled by occupancy sensors. The restrooms include automated plumbing fixtures and hand dryers, and washable ceiling tiles. The building was also designed to support a green roof system in the future. The entire project took 130 days and the students of Jalen Rose Leadership Academy were able to attend classes in the new building on their first day of school.

Frequenty Asked Questions

No. Modular buildings, even temporary ones, can be expected to last for decades. Permanent modular buildings may last for generations.

You can choose to purchase or lease modular buildings. At VESTA, we offer two leasing options:

  • Operational lease: With an operational lease, you can essentially rent the building for us as long as you need. When your lease ends, the building will return to our inventory. Operational leases can last for years at a time, although they are typically more affordable if they only last for five years or less.
  • Financed lease: Financed leases allow you to lease a building with the intention of owning. At VESTA, we work with financing partners who are specifically trained to finance leases for modular buildings.

Yes! Modular buildings are easy to customize. Whether you want a specific layout, materials, interior design, exterior design, specialty rooms, furniture, or amenities, we can customize your modular building to fit your needs.

The best way to understand is to remember that all modular construction is prefabricated, but not all prefabricated construction is modular.

Modular construction typically focuses on the assembly of fully closed or nearly closed modules. “3D volumetric” is also a term used for traditional modular construction. Prefab construction refers to anything pre-built for a building project, including pre-built walls, floors, or ceilings.
